As the name suggests, a retainer is designed to retain the position of your teeth once your teeth straightening journey comes to an end. Our teeth continue to shift as we get older and without a retainer, all your hard work will start to slowly reverse.
There are all different types of retainers and they are custom-made depending on the needs of the individual and the type of treatment you have just completed. At Exact Orthodontics we offer both fixed and removable retainers for our patients.
Fixed retainers are permanently glued to the inside of the teeth after your orthodontic treatment. A permanent retainer is designed to prevent your front teeth from shifting over time and keep your beautiful, straight smile. We recommend that removable retainers still be worn, even when a fixed retainer is in place.
Clear removable retainers are very similar to clear aligners or a mouthguard. They're made from a very thin, clear plastic that is moulded to your teeth.
Your orthodontist will tell you how long you need to wear your retainer each day.
Whilst retainers are extremely durable we understand that accident can happen. Good news is if you break or damage your retainer we can fix it or replace it!
It's important that you follow the care instructions given to you by our orthodontic team. This will reduce the risk of damaging your retainers and ensure that you maintain that straight smile you've worked so hard to get!
If you lose your retainer, get in touch with our team at Exact Orthodontics as soon as you can and we can organise your replacement.
